It's out in theaters Wednesday: "The Damned," a Spanish horror film by Pedro Martín Calero

Something is haunting Andrea (Ester Expósito), but no one can see it with the naked eye. Twenty years ago, the same presence terrorized Marie (Mathilde Ollivier). Camila (Malena Villa) is the only one who can understand what's happening to them, but no one believes her. Faced with this oppressive threat, all three hear the same crushing sound: a scream…
Our opinion[REC] , The Orphanage , The Others , Spanish horror cinema, mainly in the early 2000s, had the particularity, behind the thrills, of tackling strong themes and focusing on psychology. A legacy from which The Damned does not deviate and manages, in its best moments, to establish real suspense, as during the gripping opening sequence, which suggests the best. In vain. The sequel slows down. Pedro Martín-Calero develops three plots set in three different periods to show that a curse seems to pursue certain women. A supernatural threat that takes the form of an aging man that can only be distinguished with a camera. The idea of approaching MeToovia as a genre film is intriguing, relevant but remains unfinished, since the director gives no explanation… C. Cop.
